"Welcome to Marwen": An Action Figure's True Story

'Welcome to Marwen', the latest film from Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) follows Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carrell) who is a survivor of an assault that brought him to the brink of death.

Based on a true story, the survivor, Mark Hogancamp, built a miniature WWII village in his backyard with dolls that represent the women in his life and Nazi soldiers who attack the village.

The movie is part animation, part live action, and includes Mark's re-enactments of various scenarios fighting Nazis.

The film felt extremely long and certain scenes were cringe-worthy including Mark watching porno.
While I felt sympathy for this survivor of a violent crime, the entire film felt disjointed and the animated scenes didn't have much meaning in relation to the overall story. It felt like we, the audience, were dropped into this man's fantastical imagination, with an extremely limited view of the outside world. The film had a fantastic cast including Janelle Monae, Eiza González, and Diane Kruger but they barely had any screen-time or speaking roles outside of their animated versions.
