Adrift: A Daring Woman's Story of Survival at Sea

Adrift is a tragic tale of love and survival on the great open sea. It's based on the true story of Tami Oldham Ashcraft, a heroic woman and her fight for survival against all odds.

Adrift, which features sailing duo Tami and her fiancĂ© Richard, played by Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin, follows two narratives, telling the story of the young lovers and their perilous journey across the ocean. One narrative is seen in a series of flashbacks as the movie reveals in startling detail the events leading up to the capsizing of their sailboat from a category four hurricane as the young couple heads across the Pacific Ocean to California.

The other, is the story of survival, as the protagonist, Tami, uses her imagination to steer herself home in what would add up to be 41 days lost at sea. Surviving on peanut butter and sardines, the fearless vegetarian teaches herself how to spear fish and manages to stay alive drifting across the ocean. The movie has a surprising twist at the end.

Adrift is a hauntingly beautiful example of tragic love and the human spirit compelled by love to survive. The score itself was powerful and stayed with me, lingering long after the movie ended. I highly recommend it. However, if you have a sensitivity to realistic images of injuries, this film may not be for you.
