Disobedience Movie Review

Disobedience is a story of faith, love, and the cultures that shape and interact with us. It's also a story of forbidden love. It's based on a novel by Naomi Alderman and written and directed by Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Gloria).

In the movie, the patriarch of the family passes away and Ronit Krushka, played by Rachel Weisz, returns to her small home community in London to make necessary arrangements for her father, a stolid religious figure in the community and someone she hasn't seen in years due to irreconcilable differences.

I loved this film. Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams were sensitive to the subject and had a natural chemistry that was very moving. The cinematography and music was beautiful.

I myself have written two scripts about an Orthodox community and two Hasidic women, one of which was about a lesbian woman and her struggle to make sense of it with her strict Jewish family and her Hasidic faith.

I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys deep dialogues on faith, family, and philosophy.
