Jason Statham, Ruby Rose, Li Bingbing, and Rainn Wilson star in this heart-pounding action flick that takes place off the coast of China at a multi-billion dollar research lab. The subject of the film and the lab is a pre-historic shark of terrifying proportions by the name of Megalodon. In the story, billionaire investor, Morris, (Rainn Wilson) comes to check on his lab as the team makes a startling and major scientific discovery: there's a layer of ice covering up a hidden warm water oasis underneath. However ,what they find is a less-than perfect paradise and includes some fantastical creatures that should've died out with the dinosaurs.
The movie had some hit or miss moments. I felt that they could've done justice to the fantastical premise by either turning the film into more of a comedy or by making it into more of a horror film. Thus, it flopped a bit in this regard.
Jason Statham and Li Bingbing's flirtatious encounters made for a fun subplot and made "The Meg" much more enjoyable. Overall, it's a good popcorn movie to see with friends or family. Some scenes may not be appropriate for children.
