The Darkest Minds Review

The Darkest Minds | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX

Enter The Darkest Minds, but don't be afraid. These are still innocent children, after all.

In this dystopian film starring Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson and Mandy Moore, the majority of the world's population of children has mysteriously been eradicated by a viral disease. Only a few children remain, and they have inherited strange mutations that give them special powers turning them psychic, telekinetic, and fire-breathing, for example. Afraid of what they've become, the U.S. President in league with the military has rounded up all remaining kids and sent them to prison camps. On the brink of death, the children must fight for survival while being pursued by dangerous military leaders, bounty hunters, and others who seek to terminate them or capture them for scientific research.

I felt parts of the story were magnetic and Stenberg and Dickinson sizzled on the screen in a heart-wrenching romance. I also felt that the backstory was weak and the writers missed an opportunity to provide the audience with simple yet effective explanations for the children's baffling powers.

"The Darkest Minds" is rated PG-13 and arrives in theaters on August 3rd, 2018.
