1917 is Brilliant

Director Sam Mendes got a lot of things right with his WWI drama, 1917, which chronicles the life of two young British soldiers on a perilous journey through the trenches and beyond.

Right away, the cinematography and choice of music sets the tone and creates an almost romanticized rendering of an otherwise devastated landscape brought on by the First World War. Simultaneously beautiful and horrific, the film does an excellent job of navigating the chaotic, yet fragile expression of a total war while leaving the audience with a poetic sensibility.

With what appears to be one breathless continuous take, we follow the two soldiers, played by Dean Charles-Chapman and George MacKay, as they set out to deliver an urgent message from their commander, played by Colin Firth, to a commander (Benedict Cumberbatch) of the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regime.

1917 is an epic that must be seen by all who value and understand the significance of history and the ongoing legacy of The Great War on the world today.
