"The Hate U Give" is Poignant and Necessary

In "The Hate U Give," Amandla Stenberg gives an emotionally powerful performance as Starr Carter, a young African American girl growing up in the fictional poverty-stricken, predominately black neighborhood of Garden Heights.

The story, based on the book by Angie Thomas, explored many different ethical, political, and social questions. The director, George Tillman Jr. and writer, Angie Thomas, took every opportunity to talk about what it means to be black in America--both the good and the bad.

The story helped shed light on many hot button topics like the Black Lives Matter movement and incidents of police brutality and gang violence in a way that helped the audience see things from Starr and her community's perspective as opposed to a detached, theoretical perspective.

The film explores family, community, friendship, and poignant ethical questions relevant to the U.S. today. It was powerful. Take your adult village and go see it!
