"A Star is Born" Captivates and Inspires

In "A Star is Born", Pop icon Lady Gaga is Ally, a young ingenue discovered by the ruggedly handsome rock star Jackson Maine, played by Bradley Cooper. The duo dazzle in this musical remake of a film of the same name from a Joan Didion screenplay.

Gaga and Cooper take us along for the ride on a soulful journey experiencing the rise of a new star and the entrapments and difficulties presented to an aging musician with tinnitus and an alcohol and drug problem. There were great supporting roles from Sam Elliot as Jackson Maine's manager, Dave Chappelle as his friend, and Michael Harney playing Ally's father. Even Brandi Carlile makes a surprise appearance on stage.

Lady Gaga's voice is magic. She exudes a tenderness and purity that I haven't seen before in her work.

It's a story of love and devotion to the craft and to each other. It portrays the hero's journey from an artist's standpoint in a thoughtful way. "A Star is Born" reminds us it's about feeling the music and living in the moment, facing fears and overcoming internal demons.
