"Widows" is a Provocative Thriller

Viola Davis gives a tour de force performance in Widows the latest heist film turned thriller from Director Steve McQueen.

"Widows" is both provocative and political. Its slow, deliberate pace is chock-full of dramatic, icy moments that stir the soul and make the viewer consider important questions of gender, race, and class identity.

Davis leads the way, as a widow grieving her criminal husband's death. Her exquisite style, her grace and elegance rests on the surface while inside, we discover a terrified, but incredibly strong woman who has never gotten her hands dirty.

Alongside Davis stars Elizabeth Debicki and Michelle Rodriguez as two other widows who lost husbands during the same job.

Golden performances from Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell.

One of my favorite scenes is of Davis as the widow Veronica, listening to Nina Simone in her apartment. There's such tenderness there and great expression. An absolutely riveting performance!

I won't say too much more, I don't want to give anything away.
Go see this film! It's powerful, provocative and thrilling.

Also, Steve McQueen: thank you for giving us an action-packed heist movie from a woman's perspective without over-sexualizing the women in it.
