"The Upside" has Downsides

Brian Cranston and Kevin Hart star in this comedy-drama about a wealthy quadriplegic named Phillip Lacasse who is interviewing caretakers for a position at his penthouse apartment in New York.

Kevin Hart plays Dell, a convict, released on parole with a mission to find a job. Dell and Phillip form an unlikely friendship that has its ups and downs throughout the film.

The story felt cliched and didn't take time to explore the depths of the very real issues at stake: race, equality, disability, grief and widowing, etc.

While the film had some very comical moments, overall, I felt that it was a rather shallow film that asked nothing difficult or challenging of its actors or story but instead, hit all of the screenplay plot points as if it were checking off a list on a formulaic beat sheet. While I appreciated the mixture of opera and soul music from Pavarotti and Aretha Franklin, overall, the movie failed at so many levels that I'm giving it a C.
