"Five Feet Apart" is a Melancholy & Lackluster Romance

Spoiler Alert:

This review contains spoilers.

Five Feet Apart features Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse. It's a film about two young people living with CF (cystic fibrosis) a life-long and life-threatening illness. With great performances from both Richardson and Sprouse, I found this movie lack-luster and too medically-focused.

The entire film takes place in a hospital, so if you have any form of hypochondria, you may want to skip this movie. For those who don't have a background in CF, this film is full of medical jargon and information that is very realistic, including up-close shots of mucus.

While the film aims to be a feel-good love story, in many ways, it became a story about an illness more than a story about the people with the illness. I found myself wanting to know if this teenage romance was based on a true story, or if it was purely a work of the writer's imagination. I'm looking at you, Tobias Iaconis and Mikki Daughtry. After a traumatic scene where the main female character, Stella, falls through ice (as I knew she would), I wanted to know what happened to the characters when they were separated at the end of the film.
