"Us" is a Mind-Boggling Thriller

Jordan Peele's latest film is a tantalizing mystery with a variety of subtleties and metaphors that leave the audience with more questions than answers.

The film begins in 1986 with Lupita Nyong'o playing the main character, Adelaide, as a young girl. What starts out as a normal family vacation at an oceanside carnival turns into a hallucinatory nightmare.  After this first scene, we meet Adelaide again as an adult with a husband Gabe (Winston Duke) and two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex) of her own. The young family returns to the same Santa Cruz beachside carnival where strange incidences take place.

The film deploys several strategies including conspiracy theories, fantasy elements, and horror to provide us with a mind-bending and bizarre story that can be interpreted in many ways.

Similar to the feel of GET OUT, the audience has a feeling from the get-go that things are not right in the United States and something incredibly wrong is about to happen.

It could be viewed as a social commentary on what it means to be an individual and what it means to be a part of a community.

I predicted the twist at the end before the movie started, but didn't really consider the implications.

I won't spoil it for you. Go see it!
