"The Sun is Also a Star" is a Dreamy Love Story

'The Sun is Also a Star' is the story of Natasha Kingsley, (Yara Shahidi) an intelligent, beautiful Jamaican girl whose family is being deported out of New York City and back to Jamaica.

The film tackles a lot: immigration policy, human rights, love, relationships, and wrestles with the idea of destiny or fate.

From the very beginning, we know that the idea of destiny is at play. We meet Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) a Korean-American, college-bound poet who has written "Deus Ex Machina" in his journal (Greek for god in the machine) and later sees it embroidered on the back of Natasha's jacket. Daniel seeks to win Natasha over during a bet that he can make her fall in love with him in a day.

I appreciated the contrast between characters: Natasha was scientific and rational and Daniel was a hopeless romantic with a belief in the magical and divine.

The cinematography provided a dreamy feel as each frame dissolved into a hazy glow.

The music was also quite nice and provided a balance of contemporary hip-hop, indie rock and instrumental.

On the other hand, I found a few plot-holes, and I think over-all, the film dragged a bit and could have benefited from more of a comedic element.
