"Can You Ever Forgive Me?" is a Tender Portrayal of a Struggling Artist

In the immortal words of Dorothy Parker, (or was it Lee Israel herself?) this film begins with an active and searching question that resonates throughout the film.

Melissa McCarthy stars in this serious and darkly funny drama-biopic. It's an all-too-human story of loneliness and the artist's struggle and it gets to the audience on another level--bone-deep.

Melissa McCarthy plays Lee Israel, the once successful writer who is struggling to find popularity again amidst a depression and alcohol problem. She has a hard time seeing her own shadow, but she learns to become a great con-artist and forger, ultimately getting her power back and finding her voice through her deceptive and illegal activities.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? was written by Marielle Heller with a script from Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty based on Lee's own memoir.
